PSALM 62 – 7/13/21
Can you imagine a famous song being written for you? This magnificent psalm was written for Jeduthun. Who was he? He was a Levite and the leader of one of 3 temple choirs. He is named at the beginning of psalms 39, 62, and 77 and is either the composer, the recipient, or the choir leader for these songs. This would be a good one to memorize. It is rhythmic, catchy, and a wonderful one for soul-talk.
1 Truly my soul silently waits for God;
From Him comes my salvation.
The soul of the center of your being. It is your very life and breath – who you are in character and essence. Remember it by the acronym SWAMPED: Soul = your Will, your Appetites, your Mind, your Passions, your Emotions, and your Desires. These aspects of you are like a whipping wind at any given time. Read that short list again. It can be a tornado. If these areas of your life are unrestrained, you are said to be soulish.
That makes this verse a powerhouse of control. If you can tame your will, your appetites, your mind, your passions, your emotions, and your desires you are an exemplary human being indeed. We spend a lifetime learning to master these aspects, otherwise they dominate us.
We are like a spirited steed and Holy Spirit must break us and bring us to submission before Jesus Christ. Then we can truly say, along with one of my favorite bible passages,
“I have stilled and quieted my soul.
Like a weaned child in his mother’s arms, so is my soul within me.”
Ps 131:2
Earlier I used the word control on purpose. The two passages above show a soul at rest – unlike the rodeo in the video above. I still it. I quiet it. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. He is the soul-whisperer. A self-controlled Hannah does not mean Hannah controls Hannah. It means Holy Spirit controls Hannah. Hannah under the control of Hannah is a lose cannon. It is trouble in the making. Hannah in the control of Holy Spirit is a cleansed vessel he can use for Jesus’ glory. A broken horse that can be a magnificent thing in the hands of a rider.
Jehovah is my salvation. If I am not at rest, I am fussing and fretting. I am thrashing and whinnying wildly. I am fixing and fiddling. I am wringing my hands and biting my nails. I am coming and going, pacing and scheming. I am a nervous wreck for one reason or another. I am afraid that if I don’t do all that, my needs won’t be met and the world will not be in order. I think I am my salvation. I better figure it out because I am my provider. I am my healer. I am my teacher. I am my defender. I have to be sovereign. I have to be glorious. I AM God!
The world says achieve, pursue, toil, chase, acquire. Your King Jesus says,
““Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Mt. 11:28-30
With this paradigm shift in mind start practicing saying “Shhh!” to your soul. Marinade in the ensuing verses:
2 He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense (fortress); I shall not be greatly moved (shaken).
3 How long will you assault me?
Would all of you throw me down— this leaning wall, this tottering fence?
4 Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place;
they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse.
5 My soul, wait silently for God alone,
For my expectation is from Him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense; I shall not be moved (shaken).
7 In God is my salvation and my glory;
The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
8 Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah
9 Surely men of low degree are a vapor,
Men of high degree are a lie; If they are weighed on the scales,
They are altogether lighter than vapor.
10 Do not trust in oppression,
Nor vainly hope in robbery;
If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them.
11 One thing God has spoken,
two things I have heard:
“Power belongs to you, God,
12 Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy (unfailing love);
For You render to each one according to his work.

What good and godly thoughts today, Hannah. What a great reminder to me to stop running ahead of my Lord and sit quietly with Him today.
Thank you Marsha. A thousand times a day we have to remind ourselves…
A thousand times a day is so true for me, Hannah.
